A 12V LiFePO4 battery pack is typically made from four LiFePO4 cells connected in series (3.2V × 4 = 12.8V nominal). These cells can come in prismatic, cylindrical, or pouch formats. Each cell should have the same capacity and voltage level before assembly to ensure consistent performance.
Before starting, you’ll need to gather your essential tools and components:
4 x LiFePO4 cells (same model and capacity)
BMS (Battery Management System) for 4S configuration
Nickel or copper busbars for connections
Insulation materials and heat shrink
Multimeter, soldering tools, and safety gloves
Check each LiFePO4 cell for voltage level and physical damage. The voltage of all four cells should be nearly equal—typically between 3.25V and 3.35V. If necessary, perform a balance charge before connection. Matching cells ensures even charging and discharging performance.
Arrange the four cells in the correct order and connect them in series using busbars. Make sure the polarity is correct: the positive terminal of one cell connects to the negative of the next. Tighten the connections securely but avoid over-torquing, as it can damage the terminals.
The Battery Management System (BMS) is crucial for your safety—it balances the cells during charge and discharge, prevents over-voltage, over-current, and short circuits. Connect the BMS sense wires carefully according to its manual: typically one wire for each cell junction, plus the main positive and negative terminals.
Once wired, use insulating sheets or spacers to separate each cell and prevent short circuits. Wrap the pack in heat shrink tubing or install it in a sturdy enclosure. This step improves both safety and durability, especially if the battery will be used in mobile or outdoor applications.
Before putting the pack into service, use a multimeter to verify total voltage (around 12.8V) and check each cell’s voltage again. If everything looks balanced, connect a small load (like a 12V LED or fan) for a short test to confirm proper operation.
Always wear insulated gloves and eye protection.
Never short-circuit the cells.
Avoid soldering directly onto the terminals—use proper connectors instead.
Do not charge without a BMS installed.
Keep a fire extinguisher nearby when testing large capacity packs.
Remember: safety first. Even though LiFePO4 chemistry is inherently safer than other lithium-ion types, improper handling can still cause damage or fire risk.
Your 12V LiFePO4 battery pack can typically deliver 2000–4000 charge cycles, depending on the quality of cells and how well it’s managed. Store the battery in a cool, dry environment, and recharge it using a LiFePO4-compatible charger. Periodically check the cell voltages and ensure the BMS is functioning correctly.
For solar users, you can easily connect your DIY 12V pack to an MPPT solar charge controller to build a small off-grid energy storage system—perfect for cabins, RVs, or boats.
